How to Troubleshoot Auto Application Rates on Your Sprayer

As the spraying season gets underway, it’s time to check your sprayer is in working condition. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and get your sprayer back on track.

As the spraying season gets underway, it’s time to check your sprayer is in working condition. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you troubleshoot and get your sprayer back on track. 

1. Check Your Filters 

It might seem obvious, but it’s often overlooked. Blocked or dirty filters can cause inconsistent flow rates, leading to erratic spraying. Make sure to clean or replace filters regularly to maintain proper flow. 

2. Take Your Sprayer for a Test Drive 

Ensure your speed is steady when using Auto Rate. If your speed fluctuates, the application rate will mirror these changes. This can lead to uneven spraying, so make sure your speed is consistent to maintain accurate application. 

3. Test the 12v Regulator Valve 

The 12v Regulator Valve plays a critical role in regulating your application rate. To ensure it’s working correctly, follow these steps: 

Fill Your Tank: Make sure you have water in the tank. 

Switch to Manual Mode: Set your Auto Rate controller to manual mode. 

Turn On the Boom: Ensure water is flowing through the system. 

Cycle the 12v Regulator Valve: 

  • Wind the valve up to the maximum (+) and watch the sight glass indicator turn. 
  • Wind the valve down to the minimum (-) and watch again. 
  • Repeat this process six times. 

Over time, a residue build-up can occur at the end of the Regulator Valve’s “travel” (shaft or ball), especially if it’s only making small adjustments during fieldwork. Cycling the valve between maximum and minimum settings with water running helps clear this build-up, restoring smooth operation. 

Understanding Voltage Differences Between Manual and Auto Modes 

When in manual mode, a TeeJet Console typically sends the Regulator Valve a full 12 volts. This full voltage helps the valve move fully up and down. However, in auto mode, the console may only feed the Regulator Valve about 3.5 volts to make small adjustments. For these smaller voltage adjustments to work, the valve needs to move freely. If it’s not, your application rates will suffer.
